This morning, we continue in our study of the book of Colossians in Colossians 2:18-19. The subject is "The Error of Angelic Worship," segment number three.

We have looked at the very first phrase of Colossians 2:18: "Let no one keep defrauding you of your prize." Let no one be passing judgment against you, so that you are robbed of your prize. The Christian life is not a static situation. You have to feed the spiritual life like you have to feed the physical life. And it is the Word of God that is that food.

Nothing is so sad as to see Christians who have been actively engaged in using their spiritual gifts in God's service, and then come to a time in their lives when they trip up on the world system, of sin, and whatever. And all of a sudden, someone in highest esteem is no longer there on the line of service. That's what this first phrase is all about– that you don't lose what is your treasure in being a believer in the church age. And he says this because, in the previous two verses, he's been warning them about the Mosaic Law system as not being applicable to Christians, and trying to live by the human-effort, works system that never could work in the Old Testament.

Demas

We cannot help but think of one of the associates of the apostle Paul, when you think about people who you have looked at with great esteem, and you've held them in great honor. You looked at them, and in the great words of that philosopher, Jackie Gleason, said, "You're the greatest," and they were. And then it hurts. It is very sad to see the greatest become the "nothing-est." It can happen. We have seen it constantly happen over the years.

So, this is no small thing that we study this morning, about staying on track of the prize that is yours, as a church believer, of all the glories, and privileges, and rewards of heaven. Are you going to give that up, to operate on the human effort of the sin nature? Are you going to operate on your own opinions, instead of the leading of doctrine and of the Spirit of God?

One of the great associates of Paul was Demas. In the book of Philemon, Paul, as he closes with greetings from various people, says in verse 24 that he greets a group of people: "Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, and Luke, my fellow worker." That's pretty high company. That's the A-team. And Demas is one of them.

In our Colossians 4:14, the apostle Paul again closes with certain greetings from fellow workers, and closes Colossians saying, "Luke, the beloved physician, sends you his greeting, and also Demas. Demas was associated with Luke, one of the gospel writers.

However, as Paul Harvey says, "Here is the rest of the story." And this is our point of concern. Christians who grow spiritually, and Christians who compromise at some little point, and they resist what God is actually leading them to do.

In 2 Timothy 4:9-10, we have a poignant statement, because this is the last book that the apostle Paul wrote. This is the end of the line for his life, and he knew it. This was his second trial before Nero. This time he would not be acquitted. So, he's making this final document (final statement) to Timothy to carry on after he's gone. And I find it rather interesting that Demas is still on his heart. This was a sadness. This was a great disappointment. Here he comes to the end, and he says to Timothy: "Now, make every effort to come to me soon" – to come to Paul in Rome: "To be able to comfort; to be able to assist him; and, to be able to carry on the work that Paul was engaged in, in Rome: "Make every effort to come to me, for Demas, having loved this present world, has deserted me, and gone to Thessalonica."

Paul says, "Demas is my right-hand man; my associate; and, the man I looked at and said, 'You're the greatest.'" Now he's gone to the good times city of Thessalonica. He's gone for the fun and games. He wants to smell like the world. He wants to look like the world, in how he dresses. He wants to talk like the world. He wants to enjoy the things that are spiritually corrupting of the world's lifestyle. He just wants to be in the devil's world. He was a man who is associated with the apostle Paul. That is always a great disappointment.

The Lord Jesus Christ, of course, experienced this – what could have been. And some people shoot themselves in the foot, and they go limping on, spiritually, through life.

One of these experiences is recorded in Mark 10:21. Jesus is approached by a young man who was a man of some ruling authority in Israel. And he's rich. He has wealth. In verse 20, he asks Jesus, "What do I do to be saved?" And Jesus points out to him that the commandments of the Mosaic Law spell out the righteousness of God. How good do you have to be? You have to be as good as Jesus Christ to go to heaven. You have to have absolute righteousness.

So, Jesus says, "Well, I'll tell you what you have to. Just do this." And if that man was honest, he would say, "I can't keep those commandments. I tried, but is not uncommon for me to break them." But instead, he says in verse 20, "Teacher, I kept all these things from my youth up. I do all of these commandments." But Jesus knew what was the problem with him. It was his bank account. He was trusting in his possessions, rather than trusting in God (in the coming Messiah Savior).

"So, Jesus, looking at him, felt love." The heart of Jesus went out to this young man. He looked at him, saw the great potential, and said to him, "Good. One thing you lack: go and sell you possess; give it to the poor; and, you shall have treasures in heaven. Come and follow Me." Invest your money in the will of God; and, invest your money, and what God's mission for you in your service is. The result will be that every cent you give to Him gets clicked up on the computers in heaven at the Judgment Seat of Christ, for rewards that you'll enjoy for all eternity, and you will take it with you: "But at these words, the young man's face fell. He went away grieved, for he was one who owned much property."

This was an example of someone on the very verge of a life-transforming experience, but his money kept him from doing it. Satan is alive and well. He's out there deceiving. He's out there confusing us. He's out there substituting religion for relationship to Christ.

The Protestant Reformation in the 16th century was triggered by Martin Luther. It rejected a number of false doctrines which had been taught by the Roman Catholic Church for over 1,000 years, especially on the issue of salvation – doctrines which can be found nowhere in the Bible, and certainly not a works salvation plan. The Reformation, however, did not correct a major error which viewed the church as the new Israel, replacing the Old Testament Israel descended from Abraham. And when they did that: Martin Luther did it; Zwingli did it; and, John Calvin did it. They all said, "The Jews have been rejected. They have no future. All their covenants are now given to the church."

The Reformers

Of course, you can fit that together. You couldn't deal with that literally. There was no way that was true. But this is one thing that they, as former Catholics, could not give up the Roman Catholic idea that Israel that had been replaced by the church. When they did that, it was natural that they would think about putting the Christian under the Mosaic Law system way of life, Judaism, instead of the grace age power system of the indwelling Holy Spirit, and the doctrinal principles of the New Testament epistles.

The Old Testament

The Old Testament law was made up of three primary categories. The first one is called the commandments. This was declaring the will of God for the Jews. Then there was the judgments, which were governing the social life of the Jews. Then there were the ordinances, which governed religious life of the Jews. These three sections of the Mosaic Law were inseparable, as a whole. They were Israel's way of life, from Mount Sinai to the death of Jesus Christ. This was never applied to gentiles. It was never applied to Christians.

In Galatians 3:10, the apostle Paul, in dealing with this business of the legalism of the Old Testament law system, says, "For as many as are under the works of the Law are under a curse. For it is written: "Cursed is everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Law, to perform them. Even the apostle Paul thought he had kept all of the ten commandments. He said that he was head-and-shoulders above those of his generation. And then he realized that there was one commandment that he had broken in a serious way. And he said that that was the commandment on coveting. And suddenly, from his smug self-confidence, he realized, "I'm in trouble with the Almighty. I too am a sinner. And I cannot cover my guilt.

So, this is what Paul says: It's like a teacup. You put a chip in it, and it's defective. It is broken. Galatians 3:13-14: "Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us. For it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree (Christ on the wood of the cross), in order that in Christ Jesus, the blessing of Abraham might come to the gentiles." What was that blessing of Abraham? Genesis 12:1-3 says, "All the nations of the world will be blessed in you." The blessing was that the gentiles would have their sins paid for. And they would receive salvation, so that they would be the spiritual children – not the literal, physical, national children of Abraham. That is because: "Abraham, too, was saved by faith, believing the promise of God, in order that, in Christ Jesus, the blessings of Abraham might come to the gentiles, so that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

Then Galatians 3:23-24: "But before faith came, we were kept up in custody under the Law (the Mosaic Law), being shut up to the faith, which was later to be revealed. Therefore, the Law has become our tutor:" our pedagogue – the slave who would take the children to school. "And the Law was leading us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith," because the Law made it clear that we are hopelessly lost, and we cannot keep the standard of absolute righteousness.

So, the Law was never to provide salvation. But it was like someone who is leading the child to school, where he is going to be taught what he needs to know.

In second Galatians 2:4-5, Paul says, "But it was because of the false brethren who had sneaked in to spy out our liberty, which we have in Christ Jesus, in order to bring us into bondage." They wanted to put Christians under the Mosaic Law, who were free and able, under the Holy Spirit, to do right.

Verse 5 says, "But we didn't yield in subjection to them for even an hour, so that the truth of the gospel might remain with you."

So, the point is that it's so easy to yield to religious opinion, because it's tough to find expository churches and expository preachers – people who understand the Greek and the Hebrew enough to be able to tell you: "This is what the Word of God is saying. So, you have the mind of God, and not the opinions of man and religion.

Here is one more. James 2:10 says, "But whoever keeps the whole Law, and yet stumbles in one point, he becomes guilty of all." So, there it was. The Law was a good system. It, told us what we needed to be, but no one had the ability (he capacity) to keep it.

So, the Mosaic Law in itself was a symbolic portrayal of the holiness of God, and of the future saving work of the Messiah, Jesus Christ, on the cross. The Mosaic Law portrayed the holiness of God, and thus was, itself, declared in Scripture – The Law of Moses was spiritual. It was holy. It was righteous. And it was good, as a way of life.

Romans 7:12 points this out to us: "So, then the Law is holy, the commandment is holy, and righteous, and good. Verse 14: "For we know that the Law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh (sin nature), sold into bondage to that sin nature."

So, Paul says, "We know that what the Law told us to do was what pleased God. And that was what we needed to be. But the sin nature defeated us every time.

So, God, however, called upon the people of Israel to reflect this holy character in their lives. And that's why they had the Mosaic Law – to reflect the holiness of God in their lives, and thus the Law of Moses.

Who can do that? In Leviticus 11:44-45, here is what the Jew is directed to do: "For I am the Lord your God. Consecrate yourself, therefore, and be holy for I am holy. You shall not make yourselves unclean with any of the warming things which swarm on the earth. For I am the Lord who brought you up from the land of Egypt to be your God. Thus, you shall be holy, for I am holy." You can be unholy by worshiping a false God. Here, He says, "Don't worship these false gods of Egypt. I brought you out of that. You be holy. You be devoted to God, Who is truth.

Then, we have Leviticus 19:1-2: "Then the Lord God spoke to Moses, saying, 'Speak to all the congregation of the sons of Israel, and say to them, 'You shall be holy, for I, the Lord your God, am holy.''" We do not belittle the Mosaic Law. We do not discredit it. It simply was a standard by which man, on his own, could not attain. And without it, you don't go to heaven. Now, how is that going to be solved?

Notice Leviticus 19:3-4. And by the way, first of all, you should be holy for the Lord your God am holy. Now, immediately, what follows as an illustration of what he means to be holy? "Every one of you shall reverence his mother and father." Isn't that interesting? Of all the things He could have said, He said, "If you want to be in good standing with me (Almighty God), and if you want to be declared someone who is acting in righteousness, and living a holy life reflecting My character, you will treat your parents with obedience." And when you get to be at a mature age, you will treat them with respect. You'll be in subjection to them, and you will follow their spiritual guidance, and you will follow their wisdom. And you will have the good sense to know that they have been your age, and you have never been their age. They have experience and perception. And you don't talk back, and you don't declare your independence. If you do, Ephesians points out that don't have much of a long life. Do you want a long life? Then act with the holiness that God expects in obeying, respecting, and standing by the guidance of your parents.

Then there is the next thing about holiness: "You should keep My Sabbaths> I, the Lord, am your God." That was interesting that he brings Saturday worship in. It doesn't apply to us, but to them, that was the day set aside for thinking about the things of God. There is a principle involved there – a time when you step aside to learn what God thinks. That's what the Sabbath day was for. And that's what the instruction on that day was all about. We have Sunday, the Lord's Resurrection Day, but the principle of instruction in the mind of God is still in force, if you go to the right place. In most churches, unfortunately, the only message you'll hear is how to go to heaven, because it's focused on an organizational development program of numerical strength, which, of course, doesn't mean anything, in terms of doing the work of God.

So, the business of being holy requires a respectful day when the Word of God is proclaimed, and instruction in the mind of God is given.

Then, verse 4, of course, again says, "Do not turn to idols or make yourself golden gods. I am the Lord your God." So, that was the background of Israel being told to reflect the holiness of God.

Leviticus 20:6-7: "As for the person who tends to mediums and to spiritists (the occult), to play the harlot with them, I will also set My face against that person (cut him off from his people). You shall consecrate yourself. Therefore, be holy, for I am the Lord your God."

This is carried over by Peter into 1 Peter 1:14-16: this concept of what the Mosaic Law sought to achieve – a people who were holy in their lifestyle: "As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance. But like the holy one who called you, be wholly yourselves, also in your behavior. For it is written." And I've just taken you through these Old Testament passages that he is referring to: "You shall be holy for I am holy."

So, the Mosaic Law was a holy document. It did reflect the character of God: this wonderful, loving God – not the brutal God of Allah, but a God of love, and a God Who makes it possible to spend eternity in His family in heaven, without denying you that image in which he made you, to make your choice. The Mosaic Law was a holy document, but it was weak in enabling holiness to be achieved, because it depended on human ability to do it. And that human ability is contaminated by the sin nature.

So, consequently, the law could achieve nothing for people, except to condemn them. Romans 8:3 says, "For what the Law could not do, weak as it was, through the flesh" – weak through the sin nature."

Now, the church today (Christians today, in the body of Christ) are not under the Mosaic Law in any respect. They are under a grace spiritual power system that consists of new age doctrine, and of the enduring power of the Holy Spirit, who enables Christians, then, to live a Christian life. Romans 8:3, the first praise: "What the Law could not, weak as it was through the flesh (there is the contrast), God did." God did this for us. "Sending His Own Son, in the likeness of sinful flesh." He was human except that He had no sin nature: "And as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the requirements of the Law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh (the sin nature), but according to the Spirit."

That's a dramatic statement. I can live a godly and a holy life, but somebody else has to do it through me. That is God the Holy Spirit. The Law demonstrated that you can't do it on your own. Now, if you do not see that spiritual life by being in the instructional ministry of the church service, you will grow weak, and you will not be able to be sustained in a godly life. You drift off in the world, and you become the Demas. You'll become the rich young ruler. And people will look at you, and their hearts will go out to you. And you will someday look back, and you will grieve at the Judgment Seat of Christ in heaven, over what might have been.

Romans 6:14: "For sin (this word is singular here, indication the sin nature) shall not be master over you for you're not under Law, but under grace. You don't have to be a slave of the sin nature in your lifestyle. But if you want to live with the pigs, you can. And you will carry the dirt of the world on you.

In Galatians 5:18, the apostle Paul says, "But if you are led by the Spirit, you're not under the Law." So, all these folks around town here, in the Metroplex, who went to church yesterday, because they thought they must keep the Sabbath day (Saturday), have denied themselves the power of God that is in the grace system of the church age. A Christian who is born-again, and instructed in church age doctrinal principles, and in temporal fellowship with the Father, because all known sins are confessed, is the one who rises to a magnificent lifestyle, and who never has to play the fool, in what he does in life.

Romans 10:4 says, "Forces Christ is the end of the Law, for righteousness to everyone who believes." The Mosaic Law revealed, then, the sinfulness of unsaved man; his inability to please God, in order to earn salvation; and, his need, therefore, to be saved by the work of Christ alone.

The Mosaic Law led to the grace salvation by faith in Christ, who, through the Holy Spirit, enables the person to be holy. Galatians 3:24 points this out: "Therefore, the Law has become our tutor (our pedagogue, who is leading us to school, and who led us to Christ), that we may be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor." The Law was leading us by the hand to Christ, so that grace and the Holy Spirit could do for us what the Law required. Now that we are in the body of Christ, and now that we have the capacity of a spiritual life, we don't need the Mosaic Law.

That's what our problem is in Colossians. If you let anybody put you back under the Mosaic Law, you must understand that you are robbing yourself of your great prize: of all the heritage, and all the rights and privileges appertaining to being in the body of Christ, church-age believer, under the grace of God. The church-age Christian, through the Lord Jesus Christ, then, fulfills all the Mosaic Law, because he is a true son of Abraham.

Galatians 3:28-29: "There is neither Jew nor Greek; there is neither slave nor free men; and, there is neither male nor female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's offspring – heirs according to the promise." We're not his offspring with the privileges that belong to Israel as a nation. But we are his offspring spiritually.

Now, this is so easy to do – to compromise with the works legalistic system of the Old Testament. It is hard for us to believe that Peter, our first pope (according to Roman Catholicism), was trapped up in this legalism. In Galatians 2:11-16, here is Peter. He has had this marvelous experience of bringing the gospel to Cornelius's household, something like seven or ten years later after Pentecost. Gentiles now enter the body of Christ in full standing with the Jews. And Peter is having a wonderful time of Christian fellowship as he goes about his ministry.

Then we come here to this book, and Paul says, "Let me tell you something about Peter, and the Mosaic Law, and the legalistic system, and standing and falling." Galatians 2:11: "But when Cephas (Peter) came to Antioch," Paul says, "I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned. For prior to the coming of certain men from James (the church in Jerusalem), he used to eat with the gentiles. But when they came, he began to withdraw, and hold himself aloof, fearing the party of the circumcision."

A Jew under the Mosaic Law viewed the gentiles as a dog. And he didn't sit down and eat with dogs. And somehow, when these men came up from Jerusalem, who were saying, "You cannot be saved if your males are not circumcised. And you cannot please God if you do not live under the Mosaic Law." Now Peter becomes intimidated. Peter, instead of turning to them, and using that well-termed phrase, "Hang it on your nose," succumbed to them. Pretty soon, he's saying, "Fellas, I can't make it for lunch. I can't make it for this breakfast. I have another meeting." And he is excused. And pretty, soon he's not with them anymore.

Verse 13: "And the rest of the Jews, looking upon Peter as their example, these Jewish Christians join him in hypocrisy, with the result that even Barnabas, who was so close to Peter, was carried away by their hypocrisy." Here there are: Christ has removed the wall of separation between Jew and gentile: "Were equal privilege." It's a new age. It's a new power system. We can fulfill the high demands of the Mosaic Law, and all the blessings of God are ready to pour in upon us. And they pretend. Peter knew. Barnabas knew: "The Law doesn't apply to us anymore. We're not under that system." Hypocritically, they pretended that they had to be part of it.

In verse 14, Paul says, "When I saw that they were not straightforward about the truth of the gospel, and I said to Cephas, in the presence of all, "If you, being a Jew, live like the gentiles, and not like the Jew, how is it that you compel the gentiles to live like Jews?" Paul says, "Peter, you're not going up there making the sacrifices at the temple. You're not doing all these rituals. You're not doing all these things. You don't live like the Jew, under the Mosaic Law. Why are you imposing this upon the gentiles?"

Verse 15 says, "We are Jews by nature, and not sinners among gentiles. Nevertheless, knowing that a man is not justified by the works of Law, but through faith in Christ Jesus. Even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we may be justified (even we Jews) by faith in Christ, and not by the words of the Law, since by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified."

So, here Paul had to straighten out Peter. It is so easy to fall away from the privileged truth of grace living. The Mosaic Law cannot save anyone, and it cannot make anybody spiritual. You are not a spiritual Christian because you try keeping the Mosaic Law.

Acts 15:1: "And some men came down from Judea, and began teaching the brethren: 'Unless you are circumcised according to custom of Moses, you cannot be saved.'" That's right in a New Testament church. It happened early on.

Acts 13:38-39: "Therefore, let it be known to you, brethren, that through Him (Christ), forgiveness of sin is proclaimed to you. And through Him, everyone who believes is freed from all things, from which you could not be freed through the Law of Moses." All those ungodly ways that you wanted to be free from, you couldn't do it by trying to follow the Law of Moses. Now, as a Christian with the power system of the Holy Spirit, this is achievable.

In Galatians 5:4-5, Paul says, "You have been severed from Christ – you who are seeking to be justified by the Law. You have fallen from grace." You have been severed from Christ. And instead of being under His blessing, you have sought to be justified by keeping the works of the Law, and you have fallen away from the grace system. This is not telling that they've lost your salvation. It's telling them that they have denied themselves access to the power of God. Does that make sense?

Compare this with Romans 11:6, where Paul says, "But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works. Otherwise, grace is no longer grace." Now, that is a chilling verse. Notice: "If it is by grace, it's no longer on the basis of works, such as a Mosaic Law. Otherwise, grace is no longer grace."

Ephesians 2:8:9 tell us that we were only saved by grace through faith. You can't mix works in there. If you mix works in the grace system, you will not go to heaven. This is why Jesus said that: "The gate is small, and the road is narrow to eternal life, and few there will be who find it. You have these vast numbers of church people who look to Christ, like Roman Catholicism does, as One Who covered their original guilt. And now they must themselves, with their good works, pay for their temporal guilt. God says, "If you don't trust in Christ, and Christ alone, you've contaminated the system. I cannot give you as a gift what you try to pay Me for."

So, Paul warns that Colossians Christians not to be deceived by the false teachers who told them to live under the Mosaic Law system. And that's the point of Paul's statement – that they should not allow anybody to defraud them of their prize; not to live under that intimidation; and, not to be deceived by the false teachers who told them that they must live by the Mosaic Law. Those who try to incorporate the Jewish law system, into grace Christianity of the church age, robbed themselves of their prize: "Let no one keep defrauding you, robbing you of your prize (your treasure that is yours, as a Christian.

Positional Truth

We have looked at these things that we could lose. First, we looked at positional truth. This is eternal security, because you have been placed into Christ. You've been placed into Christ by the baptism of the Holy Spirit, at the point of your salvation. You have received the gospel. The Holy Spirit has brought the conviction to clarify your situation, and your need of receiving Christ – and then Acts 16:31 kicked in, requiring acceptance of this gift of God: "Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you enter the family of God."

The result is that you are baptized into Christ. You are now part of the church. And you have positional truth. You are internally secure. And all the riches of heaven are already at your disposal.

The Union of all Believers in Jesus Christ

Now, here's the second one that is true of the church age. And that is the union of all believers in Jesus Christ. And the point of all this, we have to ask ourselves, "Do you want to give this up, and let somebody defraud you of this, which is your right and heritage as a Christian, by going to some self-religious system; self-operating system; and, self-salvation system? All believers are in union in Christ.

John 17:20-23 tell us that Jesus said "I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those who believe in me through their word – that they may all be one, even as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You, that they also may be in us – that the world may believe that You did send Me. And the glory which You have given me, I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one: I in them; and, You in me, that they may be perfected in unity, such that the world may know that You did send Me, and has loved Me, even as You did love Me." Jesus said, "You in me, and I in You" – the unity of all believers in the Lord Jesus Christ.

In Ephesians 2:11-18, Paul says, "Therefore, remember that formerly you, the gentiles in the flesh, who are called uncircumcision by the so-called circumcision, which is performed in the flesh by human hands, remember that you were at that time separate from Christ; excluded from the Commonwealth of Israel; strangers to the covenants of promise; having no hope; and, without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus, you, who were formerly far off, have been brought near by the blood of Christ."

So, all believers have a union in Jesus Christ. This is positional sanctification. And this is the only basis of unity among believers on earth during the church age. There is no such thing as unity on an organizational level. And groups are always trying to form organizations to get disparate religious groups to unite together – Christians and Catholics together: "That's a great group," where suddenly, the compromise on salvation by grace, without human efforts, is even in their statement. If I were to read the names of the great people in the evangelical community who support that, you'd be surprised and shocked – that they would think that Catholics and biblical Christians have a common ground on salvation. There is no such thing as unity today among Christians, in general, in experience. Some unity exists within small groups, but this will even fluctuate. The only unity you have is not organizational, but that we are one in Christ. It's a spiritual unity. And the command here: "To love the brethren," calls for a mental attitude tolerance. Not all Christians are as pleasant as you are.

1 John 3:11 says, "For this is the message which you have heard from the beginning: that we should love one another." Why? Because we are brothers and sisters spiritually in Christ. You are my family.

1 John 3:18: "Little children, let us not love with word and with tongue, but in deed and in truth." There is a good verse about loving: "Oh yeah, I can say things, and I can talk." That's cheap. But when you need my help; when you need my prayer; and, when you need my supportive encouragement, am I there? Now, that is what love does. The core of love is: "I'll go out of my way for you. I'll sacrifice my interests for yours."

Then, we may add 1 John 4:7: "Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and everyone who loves is borne of God, and knows God. Of course, the word for "love" here, without getting too deep into that this morning, is the word "agape," which is different from "phile." "Agape" is a mental attitude love. It has no emotional attachment. That is because you may be unpleasant to me on a human relationship level, but you are my brother or sister in Christ, and I will treat you as I would treat the Lord Jesus Christ accordingly.

So, this command to love (and to tolerance) is because of the union of all believers. This does not mean that we have to accept or associate with Christians socially, who are negative to sound doctrine; or, who are even heretical in their beliefs. You don't have to go along with it. But you do treat them just like you do on a human level. You may have relatives who are way out of it spiritually, but you treat them with loving respect, because they are your family.

Christians today are primarily separated over doctrinal issues and their implications. And that's because so much emotion is driving what people think, and believe, and act upon, instead of what the Word really teaches. It's the old problem that the Reformers face.

So, this side of eternity, there can be no Christian unity, except that which we have because of our position in Christ. Now, this was never true in the Old Testament. Do you want to give this up? Do you want to be robbed of the preciousness of the unity of all believers in Christ? Are you going to cut out on your own, and treat the rest of us with indifference? That's not the way of the church-age, power our system.

Then, there's another one you can lose. Every believer is indwelt by the Lord Jesus Christ personally. Do you realize what that means? We shall look at that tonight.
